With Red Cross certification in CPR instruction, HandyNurse® would like you understand the importance of being prepared. National CPR & AED Week is June 1-7, and so it's the perfect time to remind everyone that everyday people can save lives.
Spotting the Signs
The first step to helping in an emergency is recognizing that one exists. Here are some key signs to look for:
Unresponsiveness: The person doesn't react when you shake them or call their name.
Abnormal Breathing: No breathing, shallow breaths, or gasping are all indicators of trouble.
No Pulse: Feeling for a pulse at the wrist is a crucial check.
Taking Action
If you see these signs, call 911 immediately. Early action is critical! Even if you're not CPR-certified, you can help by:
Positioning the person: Lay them flat on their back on a hard surface.
Opening the airway: Tilt the head back and lift the chin to ensure an open airway.
Providing comfort: Stay with the person and offer reassurance until help arrives.
The Power of CPR
While basic first aid is essential, CPR is a powerful tool. Trained individuals can significantly increase a person's chance of survival during cardiac arrest.
National CPR & AED Week: A Call to Action
Learning CPR is not just a valuable skill—it's a civic responsibility that empowers you to make a significant difference during emergency situations.
